I first played Tetris 2 on my Game Boy back in 1993. It was published by Nintendo, and it arrived at a time when the original Tetris was still a constant in my pocket. This sequel felt like a deliberate attempt to twist a familiar formula, offering a puzzle experience that was related but distinct from the block-dropping classic everyone already knew.

You control the falling blocks, but the goal is different. Instead of just clearing lines, you must erase colored blocks from the screen by matching three or more of the same color. The main mechanic involves dropping special flashing blocks onto these colored sections; when a flashing block lands, it removes all connected blocks of that color. The game progresses screen by screen, with each level presenting a pre-set arrangement of colored blocks you need to clear. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty comes from planning your drops to cause large chain reactions. It feels like a slower, more deliberate kind of puzzle solving compared to the frantic pace of the original.
