About Tecmo Bowl
Tecmo Bowl came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed and published by Tecmo. It was one of the early football games on the console, a time when sports simulations were just starting to find their footing in the 8-bit world.
You control a team of eleven players, but you directly handle the quarterback on offense and a single defender on the other side of the ball. The main objective is to outscore your opponent by moving the ball down the field. Its signature mechanics include choosing your play from a limited selection before the snap and, after the ball is thrown, a unique passing system where a receiver's icon flashes and you must press the corresponding button to attempt the catch. The game moves quickly, with a difficulty that spikes sharply against the computer's better teams. It feels fast and responsive, a game where a single broken tackle can turn into a long touchdown run.
