About Tasmania Story (japan)
I first came across Tasmania Story on the Game Boy back in 1991, a release from the developer Home Data. It was a time when handheld adventures were often simple platformers, but this one tried something a bit different, drawing from a Japanese movie of the same name. You don't see many licensed games from films on the system, so it always stood out in my collection for that reason alone.
You control a young boy named Willy, navigating a world screen by screen. Your main goal is to rescue your kidnapped girlfriend from a devil, which sends you through forests, caves, and enemy-filled plains. The core of the game involves exploration and combat; you use a sword to fend off creatures and a bow for hitting distant targets. You also collect special items, like musical notes, which are necessary to progress and unlock new areas. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, with enemies respawning quickly and precise jumps required. Playing it feels like a careful, methodical trek through a compact but challenging world.
