Okay, so Swamp Thing on NES is one of those weird licensed games that somehow ended up being... kind of fun? You play as the big green guy himself, stomping through murky swamps and punching out mutant goons. The controls take a second to get used to—Z and X for attacks, arrows to move—but once it clicks, you’re just wading through levels smacking weird creatures with your swampy fists.
The graphics are surprisingly moody for an NES game—lots of deep greens and browns, which I guess makes sense when you’re playing as a walking pile of plants. Some of the jumps are a little janky, and the enemies respawn if you backtrack, which is annoying. But there’s something satisfying about the weight of Swamp Thing’s punches. Feels like you’re really clobbering stuff.
If you’re into obscure retro games or just want to see what a 90s comic book adaptation looked like, give it a shot. Just don’t expect a masterpiece.
