Super Adventure Island II on SNES is one of those weird, charming sequels that takes the original’s formula and cranks it up with RPG elements—which sounds odd for a platformer, but somehow works. You still play as Higgins, but now you’ve got a health bar, magic spells, and even a weird little pet that evolves based on what fruit you feed it. (I spent way too long trying to get the dragon instead of the dumb bird.)
The levels are bright and chaotic, bouncing between jungle ruins and ice caves, with some surprisingly tough platforming—those floating logs over lava still haunt me. And the music? Absolute bangers, especially the boss themes. It’s janky in that classic SNES way, but if you can handle the occasional cheap hit, there’s a lot to love here. Just don’t expect Tina’s kidnapping plot to make much sense.
