Shuyaku Sentai Game

Shuyaku Sentai is one of those classic Game Boy gems where you lead a squad of color-coded superheroes through side-scrolling chaos. At first, it feels like a straightforward beat-em-up—punching robots, jumping over pits—but then you realize each character has their own weird little power. The blue guy freezes stuff, the red one does this awkward but satisfying uppercut, and I swear the pink one’s attack is just… throwing confetti? It shouldn’t work, but it does.
The boss fights are where it shines. You’ll face off against these ridiculous mechanized monsters that take up half the screen, and figuring out which hero’s ability actually hurts them is half the battle. (Pro tip: never use the green guy against the lava boss. Learned that the hard way.) The music’s all crunchy synth beats that somehow make dodging laser beams feel even more intense.
It’s janky in that very 90s way—sometimes you’ll clip through a platform or your special move just won’t register—but that’s part of the charm. If you’ve got a soft spot for games where the dialogue is mostly “HYAH!” and “TAKE THIS!”, this one’s a solid time capsule.
