SD Sengokuden 2 is one of those Game Boy RPGs that feels like a weird, charming mix of feudal Japan and chibi-style strategy. You start off picking your warlord—I went with Nobunaga first because, well, he’s Nobunaga—and then it’s straight into turn-based battles with tiny pixel samurai. The overworld map’s simple but satisfying, moving your little army blob around like a board game.
What surprised me was how much personality the sprites have, considering the hardware. Watching these super-deformed generals clash in battle never gets old, even if the combat itself is pretty straightforward. Early on, you’re mostly grinding through weaker territories, but once rival clans start ganging up on you, that’s when the real strategy kicks in. Pro tip: don’t ignore the diplomacy options unless you want to fight everyone at once.
It’s definitely a product of its time—menus are clunky, and there’s zero handholding—but there’s something weirdly addictive about slowly painting the map your color while Oda’s theme plays on loop. If you’ve got nostalgia for late-90s handheld tactics games, this one’s a solid time capsule.
