Renegade on NES is one of those early brawlers that feels rough around the edges but still kinda pulls you in. You play as this no-name street fighter taking on gangs across four levels—subway platforms, alleys, that sort of thing. It’s not a side-scroller like Double Dragon; instead, you’re stuck in these tight, two-screen-wide zones, which makes the fights feel more cramped and chaotic.
The first thing you’ll notice is how the enemies play off each other—some hit hard but go down quick, while others are tanky and love grabbing you to set up cheap shots. The third level throws the same dynamic at you, just meaner. It’s not the deepest fighter, but there’s something satisfying about landing a well-timed knee drop or finally clearing a screen full of goons. Just don’t expect to breeze through it—this one’s got some old-school jank.
