Pokémon SoulSilver is basically the best way to revisit Johto—it takes the old Gold/Silver magic and polishes it up with smoother sprites, following Pokémon (your starter trails behind you, which never gets old), and that sweet DS touchscreen menu. You start off picking Cyndaquil, Totodile, or Chikorita (I always go Cyndaquil, but good luck resisting that little water-gator’s grin), then it’s straight into the usual gym battles and wild encounters, but with way more personality.
The Pokéwalker gimmick was weirdly fun—you could transfer a Pokémon to this little pedometer thing and level it up by walking around IRL. Mostly though, it’s just a stupidly cozy adventure with that classic Pokémon grind, now with way fewer HMs to torture your team with. And yeah, you still get to fight Red on Mt. Silver, because nostalgia demands it.
If you’ve got a DS and any love for Pokémon, this one’s basically mandatory.
