About Pokemon Ranger
Pokemon Ranger came out for the Nintendo DS in 2006, developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo. It was part of that early wave of DS games that really tried to use the touch screen for something different, moving away from the standard Pokemon formula. Instead of another journey to become a champion, this one had you joining the Ranger organization in the Fiore region.
You control a new Ranger recruit, and your main job is to protect the region's Pokemon and people from various threats. The core of the game is using the DS stylus to draw loops around wild Pokemon on the touch screen to capture them. This isn't a turn-based battle; you have to circle them repeatedly while avoiding their attacks, which can break your line. You explore the world screen by screen, and the Pokemon you befriend aren't for your team, but are used as field abilities to clear obstacles like fallen trees or rivers. The pacing is steady, with the capture sequences becoming genuinely challenging against stronger Pokemon that fill the screen with hazards. It feels like a puzzle action game where your success depends entirely on the steadiness of your own hand.
