Mystic Quest (or Final Fantasy Adventure, depending on where you're from) is one of those weird little Game Boy gems that feels like a mashup of Zelda and early Final Fantasy. You’ve got swords, magic, and a surprisingly decent story for a handheld game from 1991. The combat’s simple but satisfying—just enough weight to your swings to make it feel meaty without being clunky.
At first glance, it looks like a basic top-down adventure, but there’s some sneaky depth here. You’ll chop grass for hidden items, stumble into dungeons that actually require a bit of thinking, and even ride a weird hopping cactus at one point. The music’s also way better than it has any right to be—catchy chiptune tracks that stick in your head.
It’s rough around the edges (hello, occasional slowdown), but there’s charm in how ambitious it was for its time. If you’ve ever wondered where the Mana series started, this is it.
