Mech Platoon on the GBA is one of those rare handheld RTS games that actually works. You start off with a tiny base and a couple of clunky mechs, and within minutes you're scrambling to mine resources while fending off attacks from the other side of the map. The controls take a second to get used to—you'll be tapping that touch screen like crazy—but once it clicks, it's surprisingly smooth for a GBA strategy game.
What I love is how the mechs actually feel heavy, like they've got weight to them. The little spider bots zip around while the big artillery units take forever to turn, just like you'd expect. And that Eurasia campaign? Way tougher than it looks at first glance. You'll lose a few matches before realizing you should've built more turrets.
It's not perfect—the fog of war can be brutal when you're stuck with that tiny screen—but for a portable RTS, it holds up better than most. Just don't expect StarCraft levels of depth.
