About Mahoujin Guruguru (japan)
I picked up Mahoujin Guruguru for the Game Boy back when it came out in 1991, published by Enix. It was one of many RPGs on the system, a time when developers were figuring out how to fit big adventures onto that small green screen. This one was based on an anime, which wasn't too unusual, but it had its own particular charm.
You control a young boy named Nike, and your main goal is to stop the villainous Giri. The gameplay is straightforward exploration, moving screen by screen through an overworld and into dungeons. You fight enemies in simple turn-based battles, and a key mechanic is using magic circles you draw on the map to cast spells. You also collect items and gear to strengthen your character. The pacing is deliberate, not particularly fast, and the difficulty feels fair for the era. Playing it feels like slowly uncovering a small, hand-drawn map.
