Magic Knight RayEarth on the Game Boy is one of those weird little 90s JRPG adaptations of an anime that somehow works. You play as three girls—Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu—who get pulled into a fantasy world and have to save it, classic isekai stuff. The combat’s turn-based but with this odd positioning system where you move around a small grid, so it’s not just mindless button mashing.
It’s got that classic Game Boy aesthetic—chunky sprites, simple but charming animations—and the music’s surprisingly catchy for a handheld game from ’98. The translation’s Japanese-only, so unless you’re fluent, you’ll be guessing your way through menus. Still, if you’re into retro JRPGs or the anime, it’s a neat little time capsule.
Fair warning, though: the encounter rate is brutal. You’ll take three steps, fight, repeat. Bring patience.
