Madden '95 on Game Boy is one of those weirdly satisfying handheld sports games that shouldn’t work as well as it does. You’ve got tiny sprites running plays on a postage-stamp-sized field, but somehow it nails that classic Madden feel—just pixelated. The controls are simple (d-pad and two buttons, that’s it), but there’s actual strategy here. I spent way too long in the playbook screen trying to figure out if I should go for a HB Toss or just bomb it deep.
The rosters are a nostalgia trip if you’re into '90s NFL—no franchise mode or fancy graphics, just raw football. First time I booted it up, I immediately picked the 49ers because, well, Young to Rice is basically cheating. The commentary is hilariously basic ("Touchdown!"), but it’s weirdly charming. You’ll either love how stripped-down it is or wonder why you’re not just playing a newer Madden. Either way, it’s a solid time capsule of when football games were simpler.
