Koto Battle: Tengai No Morihito is one of those Game Boy Color RPGs that somehow flew under the radar back in the day, which is a shame because it's got this weirdly charming mix of turn-based battles and Japanese mythology. You start off picking from three characters—I went with the shrine maiden first, though the samurai hits way harder if you're impatient like me.
The pixel art holds up surprisingly well, especially the monster designs—some of these yokai look like they jumped straight out of an old woodblock print. Combat's simple at first, but once you start combining elemental attacks and figuring out which spirits counter what, it gets surprisingly tactical for a GBC game.
Fair warning though: the translation's a bit rough in spots (I still don't know what half the item descriptions actually mean), but that almost adds to the charm now. If you dig obscure retro JRPGs with folklore vibes, this one's worth dusting off your Game Boy for.
