Kings of the Beach came out for the NES in 1988, published by Ultra Games. It was one of the few volleyball games on the system, arriving during a period when sports titles were trying to carve out a space alongside all the platformers and action adventures. You could play alone or with a friend, which made it a decent option for a quick match.

You control a pair of volleyball players on a sandy court, moving them around to serve, bump, set, and spike the ball over the net. The main goal is to win matches against a series of computer controlled teams across different international beach locations. Key mechanics include positioning your players to set up powerful spikes and timing your jumps at the net to block the opponent's attacks. The game moves at a brisk pace, and the computer opponents can get surprisingly difficult as you progress. It feels responsive and straightforward when you get into a good rally.
