Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories came out on the Game Boy Advance in 2004, developed by Square Enix and Jupiter. It was a strange release at the time, a direct sequel to the first PlayStation 2 game that tried to translate that big 3D adventure onto a small handheld screen. You got this full Kingdom Hearts story, but the entire structure had to be rethought for the hardware.

You control Sora, exploring a mysterious castle that recreates worlds from the first game room by room. Your main goal is to climb the castle's floors, but your progress is gated by cards you collect from battles. The combat is entirely card based; every attack, spell, and even opening doors is done by playing numbered cards from your deck. You build this deck between fights, choosing which attacks to include and arranging them for specific combos. The game moves at a deliberate pace, forcing you to think about your card plays rather than just button mashing, and the difficulty can spike sharply on later floors. It feels like a tactical, almost puzzle like twist on the usual action.
