About Kaijuu Monogatari (japan)
Kaijuu Monogatari came out in 1988 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, a Japan exclusive developed by Birthday and published by Namco. It was one of many RPGs on the system that tried to build a world for players to get lost in, without the same level of recognition as some of its contemporaries.
You control a young hero exploring a world map and navigating towns and dungeons screen by screen. Your main goal is to find the scattered pieces of a powerful weapon to defeat an ancient evil. The game combines simple sword combat with a magic system, and you spend a lot of time talking to villagers for clues and grinding for experience in random encounters. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be unforgiving if you wander into the wrong area unprepared. Playing it feels like slowly piecing together a large, quiet puzzle.
