Kaijuu Monogatari is one of those obscure NES RPGs that never made it out of Japan, which is a shame because it’s got this weird, charming vibe. You start off in a typical fantasy world—until suddenly, kaiju (giant monsters) show up and everything goes sideways. The combat’s turn-based but with a twist: you can recruit monsters to fight alongside you, and some of them are just bizarre. Like, one’s basically a sentient pile of sludge?
The graphics are simple but colorful, and the music’s got that classic NES chiptune energy. It’s not the deepest RPG out there, but there’s something fun about building a team of misfit monsters and seeing how they handle random encounters. If you’re into retro stuff and don’t mind digging for fan translations, it’s a neat little time capsule from the NES era.
