Okay, so Kaeru No Tame Ni Kane Wa Naru—yeah, that’s a mouthful—is this weird little Game Boy game where you play as a frog trying to turn into a prince. Sounds simple, but it’s actually this weirdly addictive mix of platforming and puzzles where you’re swinging on vines, tossing rocks at enemies, and figuring out how to open doors by ringing bells (hence the title, which roughly means "the bell tolls for the frog").
The controls take a second to get used to—your frog hops with this weird weight to him, and at first, I kept overshooting jumps. But once it clicks, you start pulling off these satisfying chain moves, like bouncing off a mushroom to grab a vine just out of reach. The world’s full of oddball NPCs too, like this one turtle who just stares at you judgmentally until you bring him the right item.
It’s got that classic Game Boy vibe where everything’s a little janky but bursting with personality. If you’re into obscure retro stuff or just want to see what a frog prince’s mid-life crisis looks like, give it a shot.
