Jewel of Live is one of those weird, obscure SNES RPGs that somehow slipped under the radar back in the day. The pixel art has this dreamy, slightly washed-out look—like someone took a classic JRPG and ran it through an old VHS filter. You start off as this wandering swordsman who stumbles into a cursed town, and within minutes you're knee-deep in turn-based battles against floating eyeballs and shadow knights.
What I love is how unpredictable it feels. The magic system is bizarre (why do samurai cast spells by throwing coins?), and some of the dungeon layouts will make you scratch your head. But there's something oddly charming about its jankiness—like it doesn’t care about being polished, just interesting. The music’s got these haunting synth melodies that stick with you, too.
If you’re into offbeat 16-bit RPGs with rough edges and personality, this one’s worth digging up. Just don’t expect it to hold your hand.
