Ivan Streward's Super Off Road is this chaotic little top-down truck racer where you and a couple friends can smash into each other on dirt tracks that get progressively more ridiculous. The NES version actually lets four players go at it if you’ve got the Satellite or Four Score adapter—good luck finding one now, though.
You start with a clunky truck that handles like a shopping cart, but winning races gets you cash to upgrade your ride. Better tires, more nitro, a faster engine—it’s satisfying to feel your truck actually start responding after a few upgrades. Just don’t crash too much, because unlike the arcade version, the NES edition resets your money to zero if you continue. Brutal.
It’s one of those early games where vehicle upgrades actually mattered, and you can see how it influenced later arcade racers. The tracks are tight, the controls are slippery in that old-school way, and the nitro button exists purely to send you flying into walls at the worst possible moment. A total mess, but the fun kind.
