Haou Taikei Ryuu Knight—Lord of Paladin is one of those SNES RPGs that flew under the radar for a lot of people, but it’s got this weird, almost fever-dream charm to it. You start off as this knight-in-training, and within minutes, you’re thrown into a world where dragons, magic, and some seriously questionable fashion choices collide.
The combat’s turn-based but with a twist—you’ve got this formation system where positioning actually matters, which means you can’t just mash attack and hope for the best. I remember getting wrecked by the first boss because I didn’t realize my healer was standing in the wrong spot. Lesson learned.
Visually, it’s got that early ‘90s anime aesthetic, all bright colors and exaggerated armor designs. The music’s surprisingly catchy too—there’s this one dungeon theme that’s been stuck in my head for years. If you’re into obscure RPGs with a bit of jank (and let’s be honest, most of us are), this one’s worth digging up.
