G.I. Joe: The Atlantis Factor is one of those NES games that feels like it should be way cooler than it actually is. You pick from a roster of Joes—Snake Eyes, Duke, Roadblock—and jump into side-scrolling missions where you punch, shoot, and occasionally grapple-hook your way through Cobra goons. The sprites are big and chunky, which is fun, but the controls are just a little too stiff to feel satisfying.
Weirdly, you can swap characters mid-level, which sounds awesome until you realize some of them are borderline useless (looking at you, Sci-Fi). The underwater sections drag on forever, and good luck figuring out where to go without trial and error. Still, there’s something charming about the sheer 90s-ness of it—the explosions, the voice samples, the fact that Baroness shows up just to laugh at you.
If you’re nostalgic for licensed NES games, it’s worth a quick play. Just don’t expect it to hold up like Contra or Ninja Gaiden.
