About Fortified Zone
Fortified Zone came out for the Game Boy in 1991 from Jaleco. It was part of that early wave of portable games where developers were figuring out what worked on the small screen. You got a lot of action games, but this one stood out for its specific blend of genres.
You control two commandos, switching between them on the fly. One is a close range specialist with a sword, and the other uses a bow for distance attacks. Your goal is to infiltrate a heavily guarded enemy base, moving screen by screen through its levels. Each character has their own health bar, so managing who takes the hits becomes a key part of the strategy. The game is challenging; enemies respawn when you leave and re enter a screen, and you need to find keycards to unlock doors deeper into the complex. It feels tense and tactical, forcing you to think about positioning and which soldier to use for each new threat.
