Fortified Zone on Game Boy is one of those sneaky-good action games that doesn’t get talked about enough. You control two agents—one with a machine gun, the other with grenades—and swap between them on the fly to blast through waves of enemies. The top-down view makes it feel like a mix of Metal Gear and a twin-stick shooter, except, well, no sticks because Game Boy.
At first, I kept getting cornered because I wasn’t using cover right, but once you figure out how to lure enemies into choke points, it clicks. The maze-like bases have these little hidden rooms with power-ups, and some doors need both characters to open, which keeps things tense when you’re low on health. Also, the grenade guy’s explosions are weirdly satisfying for 8-bit effects.
It’s tough but fair—if you’re into that old-school “learn by dying” vibe, this one’s a gem. Just don’t expect the soundtrack to blow you away.
