F1 Pole Position on SNES is one of those early racing games that somehow nails the speed feel despite the hardware limits. You’ve got all the official 1992 F1 teams and tracks, and the handling’s surprisingly tight—once you get used to the weird brake-tap rhythm needed for corners. The AI’s aggressive as hell, too; they’ll shove you into the gravel if you leave an inch open.
First race I tried was Monaco, which was a mistake. Crashed into like five barriers before realizing you gotta downshift early. The cockpit view’s cool, though—just a low-res dash and your hands turning the wheel, but it adds to the tension when you’re barely holding a lead in the last lap. Music’s all synth horns and drum machines, pure ‘90s cheese in the best way.
It’s not perfect (good luck passing anyone on narrow tracks), but for an early SNES racer, it holds up better than most. Human Grand Prix II in Japan got some extra polish, but this version’s got its own charm.
