DunQuest—Majin Fuuin No Densetsu is one of those SNES RPGs that flew under the radar back in the day, but man, it’s got this weird charm. You start off in some sleepy village, and before you know it, you’re knee-deep in cursed ruins fighting off demons with a party that somehow includes a thief who’s way too cheerful for the apocalypse.
The pixel art’s got that classic 16-bit warmth, and the dungeons? Proper maze-like, the kind where you’ll scribble notes on graph paper if you’re not careful. Combat’s turn-based but with a twist—some spells actually change the battlefield, which keeps fights from feeling stale. First time I cast a quake spell and saw the terrain crack open, I just sat there grinning.
It’s not perfect—the translation’s a little rough in spots, and good luck figuring out which stats actually matter without trial and error. But there’s something about the way it blends traditional JRPG vibes with its own weird little quirks that makes it stick with you. If you dig SNES-era dungeon crawlers, this one’s worth dusting off.
