Double Dragon III on NES is a weird one—it’s not just a straight port of the arcade game, but a whole reimagining. Technos Japan handled this version, and they changed up pretty much everything: different enemies, new stage layouts, even the title got tweaked to The Sacred Stones instead of The Rosetta Stone.
At first glance, it still feels like Double Dragon—same side-scrolling brawler action, same satisfying punches—but the levels throw curveballs. You’ll fight ninjas in dojos one minute, then some dude with a whip in an alley the next. The controls are a little stiffer than the arcade version, but once you get used to it, there’s a weird charm to the NES take. Just don’t expect it to play exactly like the original.
