Double Dragon came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, developed by Technos Japan. It was one of the defining side-scrolling brawlers on the platform, a time when co-op games you could play with a friend on the couch were becoming a bigger part of the home console experience.

You control one of the Lee brothers, Billy or Jimmy, moving from left to right through city streets and enemy hideouts. Your goal is to rescue Billy's girlfriend, Marian, from the Black Warriors gang. The core of the game is hand-to-hand combat; you punch, kick, and jump-kick your way through waves of thugs. You can also pick up weapons like baseball bats and whips dropped by defeated enemies, which adds a nice tactical layer. The game progresses screen by screen, and the difficulty ramps up quickly, demanding you learn enemy patterns and how to position yourself to avoid getting surrounded. It feels satisfying to land a solid combo and clear a path forward.
