About Cosmic Wars (japan)
Cosmic Wars came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, developed and published by Konami. It was a late NES title, a turn based strategy game that borrowed its setting and ships from the Gradius series. The cartridge even had a battery backup to save your progress, which felt like a real luxury at the time. Its Japanese marketing slogan set the stakes, basically saying that the previous Gradius battles were just a small fight compared to this.
You command a fleet of ships, moving them on a grid based map to conquer planets and eliminate enemy forces. Your main goal is to capture the enemy home base while defending your own. The game plays out screen by screen, with you positioning your units during a planning phase before watching the action unfold. You manage resources to build more ships, choosing from different vessel types like the Vic Viper that have unique attack ranges and movement. The pacing is deliberate, demanding careful thought about unit placement and anticipating the computer's moves. It feels like a slow, tense war of attrition where a single miscalculation can unravel your entire front line.
