Ever played an NES game where you build your own hero from scratch? Cocoron is this weird little platformer where you piece together your character like a toy—pick a body type (robot, ninja, samurai, etc.), slap on a weapon, and even tweak how they jump. At first, I went with a basic sword guy, but after getting wrecked by the first boss, I came back with a floating eyeball that shot lasers. Classic NES jank, but in the best way.
The levels are these surreal, colorful obstacle courses with some seriously mean enemy placements. You’ll die a lot, but swapping your build between tries keeps it from feeling cheap. Also, the music slaps—expect bleepy, upbeat tunes that’ll stick in your head for days. It’s not the smoothest platformer out there, but the sheer creativity makes it worth a look if you’re into oddball retro games.
