About Cocoron (japan)
Cocoron came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, developed and published by Toho. It was part of that later wave of NES games where developers were getting more experimental with the hardware, trying out new ideas before the 16-bit consoles took over completely.
You control a small, customizable robot on a quest to rescue a kidnapped girl. The main goal is to fight through seven themed worlds, each a series of single-screen platforming challenges. Before you even start a stage, you build your character from three parts: a head for your primary attack, a body that determines your health and jump height, and a weapon that gives you a secondary ability. This means you might go in with a boomerang head and a gun, or a sword and a shield. You explore each stage methodically, defeating enemies and searching for the exit, often needing to find a specific item or key to proceed. The game has a steady, deliberate pace; it is not a fast reflex test but more of a thoughtful crawl through enemy-filled rooms. The difficulty comes from learning enemy patterns and figuring out how to use your current build to overcome environmental puzzles. Playing it feels like solving a series of small, action-oriented problems with the tools you chose for yourself.
