About Chachamaru Panic (japan)
Chachamaru Panic was a Japan only release for the original Game Boy, coming out in 1990 from developer/publisher I'Max. It arrived during the early years of the handheld, a time when developers were experimenting with how to build action games for that small, monochrome screen. You don't hear much about it now, but it was one of many titles that filled out the library.
You control a young boy named Chachamaru, and your goal is to rescue a girl from a castle. The game plays out screen by screen; you move from one static area to the next, clearing all the enemies before you can proceed. Your main tool is a sword for close combat, but you can also find and use a bow for attacking from a distance. The pacing is methodical, as you carefully eliminate foes in each room, and the difficulty can be unforgiving if you rush. It feels like a deliberate, sometimes tense puzzle where every enemy placement matters.
