Ever tried fishing on the NES? The Black Bass is one of those weirdly addictive early fishing sims where you’ve got from sunrise to sunset to reel in as many bass as possible. The controls are simple—cast, wait for a bite, then mash buttons to reel it in—but the timing’s trickier than it looks. Miss the hookset, and that fish is gone.

What’s funny is how weirdly tense it gets when a big one bites. The rod bends, the line tension meter spikes, and suddenly you’re sweating over whether to reel fast or ease up so the line doesn’t snap. The pixelated water and chunky sprites haven’t aged well, but there’s still something satisfying about landing a lunker before the sun dips below the horizon.

Just don’t expect realism—this is pure arcade fishing, complete with bass that fight like they’ve been chugging energy drinks.
