Air Fortress came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed by HAL Laboratory. It was one of those games that didn't get a huge amount of attention but had a specific feel, a mix of two different styles that was common for the era as developers experimented with the hardware.

You pilot a small ship, first flying horizontally through open space, shooting down enemy crafts and dodging their fire. Your goal is to find and enter a series of giant fortresses. Once inside, you leave your ship and continue on foot as a lone astronaut. The gameplay shifts to a methodical, screen by screen exploration of the fortress interior. You use a limited energy beam to destroy blockades and hostile creatures, all while searching for the core to destroy it. The tension builds because your suit's energy constantly drains, acting as a timer. Navigating the maze-like interiors with this pressure creates a real sense of urgency and isolation.
