Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel is one of those weird, forgotten SNES platformers that somehow sticks with you. You play as this hyperactive squirrel who dashes, glides, and occasionally faceplants into enemies—it’s way more chaotic than it sounds. The first level throws you right into it: bouncing off mushrooms, dodging spike traps, and figuring out the weird momentum of Zero’s glide (hint: hold the button longer than you think).
The art’s got that early ‘90s charm—bright colors, goofy enemy designs, and backgrounds that look like someone spilled a bag of neon gummy worms. The music’s surprisingly catchy too, especially the boss theme that kicks in when you fight a giant… whatever that thing is. Not every mechanic lands perfectly (that wall-cling move is janky as hell), but there’s something oddly satisfying about nailing a tricky glide sequence or discovering a hidden path stuffed with extra lives.
If you’re into obscure platformers with personality, this one’s worth a weekend afternoon. Just don’t blame me when you get stuck on that ice level.
