Umihara Kawase is one of those weird, wonderful SNES games that feels like nothing else. You play as a girl with a fishing rod—not for catching fish, but for swinging around like some kind of bizarro underwater Spider-Man. The physics are janky in the best way: one wrong flick of the line sends you flying into a school of weird, smiling sea creatures, but when you nail a swing just right, it’s pure magic.

The levels are these surreal, waterlogged mazes full of floating platforms and enemies that look like rejected Pokémon designs. At first, you’ll probably faceplant into the scenery a lot—the controls take some getting used to—but once it clicks, you start pulling off ridiculous acrobatics. There’s something oddly satisfying about flinging yourself across gaps using nothing but a fishing hook and momentum.

Originally a Japan-only release, the English translation makes it way easier to appreciate how bizarrely charming this game is. It’s short, tough, and doesn’t hold your hand, but that’s part of the appeal. If you like platformers with personality (and a steep learning curve), this one’s a hidden gem.
