Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 on the GBA is one of those rare handheld ports that actually nails the feel of the console version. You start off picking a skater—I always went with Tony, obviously—and then you’re thrown into a two-minute run to rack up points, find hidden tapes, and just generally wreck the place with kickflips and grinds.
The controls take a second to get used to, especially nailing combos on that tiny D-pad, but once it clicks, you’ll be stringing together manuals and special moves like it’s nothing. The levels are scaled-down versions of the console ones, but they still pack in plenty of ramps, rails, and secret spots to discover. College campus rooftops, Alcatraz—it’s all here.
What surprised me was how much content they squeezed in. There’s a full career mode, trick challenges, even create-a-skater. The graphics are pixelated as hell, but the animations are smooth, and the soundtrack (while MIDI-fied) still slaps. If you’ve got a GBA and even a passing interest in skate games, this one’s a no-brainer.
