About Tecmo Bowl (japan)
I first played Tecmo Bowl on the Game Boy in 1991, a portable version of the earlier NES game published by Tecmo. It arrived when handhelds were mostly simple affairs, and having a football game in your pocket felt like a small miracle.
You control the quarterback on offense, calling plays from a limited set and then trying to complete passes or hand off the ball. The main objective is to outscore the opposing team by moving down the field. Signature mechanics include the pre-snap play selection, where you pick from a few offensive and defensive formations, and the passing system, where you target a receiver by pressing their corresponding button as the quarterback throws. The game moves quickly, and the difficulty comes from reading the defense and avoiding tackles. It feels immediate and satisfying when a long pass connects just before you're sacked.
