Super Power League 4 is one of those SNES baseball games that flew under the radar outside Japan, which is a shame because it’s got this weirdly satisfying arcade feel to it. The pitching mechanics are simple but punishing—miss your spot and that fastball turns into meatball city. Batting feels chunky in the best way, like you can almost hear the crack of the bat through the 16-bit sound effects.
First thing you’ll notice? The player sprites are absurdly detailed for an SNES sports title, all exaggerated wind-ups and sliding animations that look straight out of a manga. There’s no deep franchise mode or anything, just quick exhibition matches or a tournament bracket, but the AI actually puts up a fight. I lost my first game 2-1 because I kept swinging at curveballs in the dirt like an idiot.
If you’re into retro baseball games, this one’s got way more personality than most. Just don’t expect it to go easy on you.
