So Sagaia—or Darius II, if you're playing the Japanese version—is basically the Game Boy port of Taito's classic side-scrolling shooter. It's got that same weird, fish-themed enemy design and branching paths from the arcade original, but obviously scaled down for the handheld.
You start off picking one of three ships (Silver Hawk, of course), and right away you're dodging waves of mechanical sea creatures while the chiptune version of that iconic Darius soundtrack kicks in. The screen scrolls a little choppy compared to the arcade, but it's impressive they got the multi-stage branching paths working on a Game Boy. Some of the later zones get brutal with the bullet patterns—good luck with that boss rush near the end.
Fun fact: The North American release cut a few levels and tweaked the difficulty. If you're emulating, try both versions to spot the differences.
