About Pokemon Of The Past Dx
I've been playing Pokemon Of The Past DX on the original Game Boy Color hardware. It was released in 2000, developed by a small team whose name escapes me now. It fits right in with that era of ambitious, sometimes experimental, fan projects that pushed the limits of what the hardware could do, sitting alongside other late-generation GBC titles.
You control a young trainer exploring a region filled with prehistoric Pokemon. Your main goal is to complete the regional Pokedex by discovering and documenting these ancient species, many of which are not found in the official games. The core loop involves screen by screen exploration of dense jungles and caverns, using tools like a brush to clear away foliage and a special scanner to identify fossil imprints. Combat is turn based, but it incorporates a rock-paper-scissors style type chart unique to these prehistoric creatures. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical, as you slowly piece together the ecosystem. It feels like being a field researcher more than a traditional champion, a quiet and thoughtful kind of adventure.
