About Otto's Ottifanten
I first played Otto's Ottifanten on the Game Boy in 1993, a time when the handheld was full of quirky platformers. It was developed by Neon and published by Infogrames, based on the German comic characters by Otto Waalkes. The game fit right in with the era's simple, character-driven adventures, offering a straightforward challenge without much fanfare.
You control Otto, a cheerful elephant, navigating through side-scrolling levels. The main goal is to rescue your kidnapped friends, the other Ottifanten, from a circus. You jump between platforms, avoid enemies like birds and spiders, and collect musical notes. A key mechanic involves finding and using Otto's trumpet to stun enemies, which is essential for clearing a path. The levels are compact and screen-by-screen, requiring careful timing to avoid pitfalls and projectiles. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly in later stages, especially with the limited lives. It feels like a cheerful, if sometimes unforgiving, scramble through a cartoon world.
