About Oira Jajamaru! Sekai Daibouken (japan)
I picked up Oira Jajamaru! Sekai Daibouken on the Game Boy back in 1990, a release from Jaleco. It was one of those many platformers that filled the system's library in its early years, a straightforward Japanese title that never made it overseas officially. You just took it as it came, another adventure in your pocket.
You control Jajamaru, a young ninja, navigating a series of side scrolling and overhead stages. Your main goal is to rescue Princess Sakura, which involves traveling through themed worlds, each a collection of individual levels. You use a short range sword attack against enemies and can collect power ups, like a bow for ranged combat, to help you through. The game progresses screen by screen, with some light exploration to find the exit. The pacing is quick, but the difficulty can spike unexpectedly in later areas, demanding precise jumps and attacks. Playing it feels like a brisk, sometimes unforgiving, test of your basic platforming skills.
