About Monster Maker
Monster Maker came out for the Game Boy in 1991, developed by SOFEL. It was part of that wave of early portable games where developers were trying out all sorts of ideas, not just straightforward action titles. This one stood out because it blended a traditional RPG framework with a monster-raising system, which was a less common approach at the time.
You control a young boy whose main goal is to explore the world, fight monsters, and ultimately challenge the evil wizard. The core of the game is raising your own monster companion. You feed it meat to make it grow, teach it new abilities, and take it into turn-based battles. The exploration happens screen by screen across an overworld and in dungeons, and the combat is menu-driven. The pacing is deliberate, focused more on nurturing your creature than on fast-paced action. It feels like a quiet, personal project, watching your creation slowly become powerful enough to face the final boss.
