About Monster Maker - Barcode Saga (japan)
Monster Maker - Barcode Saga was a Japan only release for the original Game Boy, published by SOFEL. It came out during a time when the handheld was full of experimental titles, especially in Japan, and this one certainly fit that description with its unique premise.
You control a young boy who is a monster tamer, and your main goal is to explore the world, capture monsters, and raise them to fight in turn based battles. The game's signature mechanic is using a barcode scanner peripheral; you could scan real world barcodes to generate new monsters for your collection. Beyond that, you explore the world screen by screen, engage in random encounters, and manage your monster team's growth. The pacing is deliberate, focused more on collection and training than fast action, and it can be a bit grindy. It feels like a strange, personal project of building your own bestiary from everyday objects.
