Momotarou Dengeki is one of those weird little Game Boy gems that never left Japan—which is a shame, because it’s a surprisingly solid action-RPG. You play as the peach boy from the folktale, but instead of fighting demons with animal pals, you’re smacking enemies with a hammer and tossing magic cards like some kind of pint-sized battlemage.
The first thing you’ll notice is how chunky the sprites are—everything’s got this cute, rounded look, but the combat actually has some weight to it. You start in a village where some old guy immediately sends you off to bonk monsters, and within minutes you’re juggling between melee attacks and these elemental cards that do everything from shooting fire to summoning temporary shields. It’s simple, but there’s something satisfying about the way enemies go flying when you land a good hit.
Also, the music slaps. That 8-bit soundtrack goes way harder than it needs to for a game about a kid in a diaper wielding a comically oversized mallet. If you’re into obscure retro stuff, this one’s worth a look—just don’t expect an English patch.
