Momotarou Dengeki is one of those classic Game Boy games that feels like digging up a time capsule. You play as Momotarou, the Peach Boy from Japanese folklore, but instead of just reading about him, you're smacking demons with a wooden mallet across chunky pixelated islands. The sprites are tiny but full of personality—especially the weird little dog, monkey, and pheasant that join your party.
It’s simple—walk left, hit things, collect power-ups—but there’s something satisfying about how weighty the combat feels for an 8-bit game. The first time I played, I got stuck for way too long on a jumping section (those old-school hitboxes, man), but once it clicks, it’s weirdly hard to put down. The music’s got that classic tinny Game Boy charm too, all bleeps and bloops that somehow stick in your head.
If you’ve got a soft spot for retro action-platformers, this one’s a solid little adventure. Just don’t expect anything fancy—it’s pure, uncomplicated 90s handheld fun.
