Mega Man Soccer is one of those weird, charming SNES spin-offs that shouldn’t work but somehow does. Dr. Wily, still salty about losing to Mega Man for the hundredth time, decides to settle things on the soccer field—because why not? You pick from a roster of familiar Robot Masters (Cut Man, Guts Man, etc.), each with their own hilariously unbalanced special moves. Ice Man freezes the ball mid-shot, Elec Man zaps opponents who get too close—it’s chaotic in the best way.
At first, I just mashed buttons and hoped for the best, but there’s actually some strategy here. Do you stack your team with all Fire Men for insane shooting power, or mix in a Quick Man for speed? The overhead view takes some getting used to, and yeah, the controls are a little stiff by modern standards, but sliding into Roll with a reckless tackle never gets old. Just don’t let Dr. Wily’s team score—losing to that guy in soccer would be embarrassing.
It’s janky, it’s ridiculous, and I love it for that.
