About Master Karateka
Master Karateka came out for the Game Boy in 1990, published by Mindscape. It was part of that wave of games trying to bring deeper, console style experiences to the handheld, a time when you could carry an adventure in your pocket. The game is a port of the original Apple II title, scaled down for the small screen but keeping its core idea intact.
You control a lone martial artist navigating a series of side scrolling and flip screen environments. Your goal is to rescue your kidnapped love interest from an evil warlord's fortress. The gameplay is built around timing based combat; you hold a button to enter a fighting stance and then press another to execute a high, medium, or low kick. Enemies attack from both sides, so you must constantly turn to face them and watch their movements to block or counter. You explore the fortress room by room, facing guards and avoiding traps, with a life bar that depletes quickly if you make a mistake. The difficulty is unforgiving, demanding precise inputs and patience. It feels like a tense duel where every encounter could be your last.
