About King Of Fighters '95, The
I picked up The King of Fighters '95 on Game Boy back in 1996, a port of the SNK arcade game. It was a time when getting a decent fighting game on a handheld felt like a small miracle, and this one came from the original developers, which was a good sign. You didn't expect arcade perfection, but you hoped for a solid version you could take anywhere.
You control a team of three fighters, chosen from a decent roster, and your goal is to win the tournament by beating all the other teams. The core mechanics are what you'd expect: you execute special moves with directional inputs and button combos, and you can perform a super jump to close distance or escape pressure. A defining feature is the team edit function, letting you mix and match characters to create your own squad, which added a lot of replayability. The game moves at a brisk pace, and the AI can be quite challenging, demanding you learn the timing for your attacks and blocks. It feels responsive and sharp in your hands, a satisfying pocket-sized brawler.
